Biography and Medals
Sifu Jonathan Weizhang Wang was born in 1973 in Beijing, China. He began his studies in Kung Fu at the age of eight when he started training in He Bei Style Xing Yi under Master Cui Guo Gui. In 1989, Sifu Wang immigrated to the U.S. and started training under Grandmaster Jiang Hao Quan. Grandmaster Jiang is a distinguished graduate of the Nan King Guoshu Institute and was one of the top 10 martial arts professors in China. Sifu Wang intensely studied traditional Chinese fighting techniques under Grandmaster Jiang for several years. At this time he was also studying Tai Chi under his father, Master Daniel Yu Wang, who is one of the few people in the world to have mastered all five classical styles of Tai Chi in addition to Tai Chi San Shou and weapons.
In his over twenty years of studying martial arts, Sifu Wang has established himself as a leading figure in Kung Fu and Tai Chi both nationally and internationally. He has received Grand Master status, in part because he has won over 500 medals in virtually every advanced category throughout his years of competition. He is currently regarded by many as one of the best all-around Kung Fu competitors in the United States as well as receiving Inside Kung Fu Magazine’s prestigious 2007 “Competitor of the Year” honor.
The entertainment industry has also been utilizing Sifu’s skills by hiring him as both consultant and fight choreographer for projects such as Disney’s Mulan On Ice, The Deadliest Warrior, and The Sunset Strip TV programs, and by studios such as Nickelodeon Animation.
In addition to his continued participation in tournaments and diligent training, Sifu Wang returns to Beijing, China, several times a year to perfect his skills by training with some of China’s most respected Kung Fu masters.
However, teaching Kung Fu and Tai Chi, practicing acupuncture, choreographing movie fight scenes, and furthering his knowledge of martial arts are not enough. Sifu also conducts seminars extending the reach of Kung Fu worldwide with recent seminars in countries including the Czech Republic and Italy.
Sifu Wang holds a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and is a Licensed Acupuncturist. His decades of study and his reverence for the martial arts have placed him at the forefront of documenting traditional Kung Fu forms before they are lost forever.
